Daily Grind: ‘Japan: A Skier’s Journey’ explores winter contrasts

“Thirty million people. Cities within cities. Fire bombed. Earth shaken. Lost decades. Continually reborn. Anonymous. But in endless Tokyo, the biggest city of the world, we find tiny capsules of intimacy, and friendship.” These are the opening words of the first episode of “Japan: A Skier’s Journey” by outdoor gear maker Arc’teryx and filmmaker Jordan Manley. The film explores contrasts: deserted mountains at night compared to Tokyo’s glowing, bustling streets; the frozen peaks of a mountain compared to the flowing Sea of Japan below it; and, ultimately, the intimacy that one can find in Japan’s empty, sacred forests compared to the same intimacy found in its cities.
