On Wednesday, the biggest award show in sports — the ESPY Awards — went down at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. When all was said and done, the awards for Best Male Action Sports Athlete and Best Female Action Sports Athlete went to a pair of snowboarders: Mark McMorris and Anna Gasser.
The awards come on the heels of incredible seasons for 23-year-old McMorris and 25-year-old Gasser.
Gasser, the Austrian big-air specialist, claimed the top spot in Women’s Slopestyle at the Burton U.S. Open of Snowboarding, bagged four wins in five events in the International Ski Federation (FIS) Big Air World Cup to take the overall title and took home her first X Games gold medal in slopestyle at X Games Norway.
“I can’t believe I’m holding this trophy in my hands,” Gasser was quoted as saying by the Salzburger Nachrichten while accepting her award.
McMorris, who took home his first ESPY in his fourth nomination, came back from a shattered femur last year to dominate, claiming three X Games medals and two FIS crystal globes this past season, as well as winning slopestyle at the U.S. Open like Gasser.
McMorris wasn’t at the ESPY Awards Wednesday; his Instagram story shows that he’s in Canada at the moment, continuing to recover from a horrific backcountry crash in March. However, he posted the above Instagram thanking his fans.
