X Games axes Snowboard X, Skier X, Mono X; industry reacts

Last week, ESPN announced two of the longest running events in X Games history, Snowboard X and Skier X, would not be a part of the 2013 Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado. ESPN cut the events, along with Mono X, and will not build the famed X Course on Buttermilk Mountain this year.

The decision to cut the competitions wasn’t easy, according to Tim Reed, senior director of content strategy for ESPN X Games. “We understand the ramifications these things bring. We come up with what we believe are the best events to showcase to our fans on-site and obviously the networks, too. There wasn’t one single factor that led to this decision. It just comes down to filling the schedule with how much we believe we need to make the event enjoyable to the fans and deliver on what we need from a product standpoint,” Reed said in an article on ESPN.

News that these events have been nixed from the Aspen lineup has rocked the snow industry and many athletes, and industry endemics have taken to Twitter to voice their disapproval of the decision.

Here is a rundown of reactions from the industry’s elite.

Bummed and pissed. Skier X was easily one of my favorite events. Better than watching gas-guzzling snowsleds circling a track 47 times.

From what I can tell, every international ski and snowboard feed is unhappy with @xgames decision to drop Ski & Boarder X. Athletes are gutted.
