Learn How To Make A Stencil

By: Tom Morin

How to Make A Stencil
You ever wonder how to make a stencil? Well, you should of by now, remember this is a DIY (Do It Yourself) scene. Don't rely on the brands to tell you how you should decorate you skate/surf/snow boards, walls or even your surroundings. I'm not condoning the defacing of public property, but it is one way of getting you name out there. Just ask Shepard Fairey (The genius behind Obey) and Neck Face how far their "free" of cost billboards have gotten them over the years.

Anyway, just get your creative on. Say hello to the Dragon of Hanalee, or salute the Captain, or just simply keep it Ian Mackaye style. However it may be, get creative, think of a funny combination of words and spread your gospel. I don't, know things like, "BMXers Use The Side Door," or "The Fat Olson Twin Was Here," or "Barack My Obama (if you live in a conservative town)," or even "Listen To The Wide-Ons," if you want to show your support for MORINformed.

Here's a little video courtesy of Jason Filipow and Hurley on how to create a stencil:

Habitat's Treat For The Feet

By: Tom Morin

Habitat Shoes
Workshop spawn, Habitat, has announced they'll be getting into the footwear game, and will have a whole new team to rock their kicks. After a decade as a deck manufacturer, the DNA boys (DNA Distribution) have decided to give the Habitat brand a new objective, which rhymes with meat, and is pretty neat, and that objective is feet.

To coincide with this announcement Habitat has also let it be known they'll have a whole new team of steez' to inhabit these treats of the feet. The lineup will go as follows: Guru Khalsa, Marius Syvanen, Austyn Gillette, and, Alex Davis. This comes as no surprise because their main team, as in their deck riders, are under contract by some footwear heavy-weights. Some company up in Oregon that goes by Nike sponsors Habitat deck riders: Steffan Jankowski, Danny Garcia and Tim O'Conner, and then there's last year's S.O.T.Y. and Habitat deck rider, Silas Baxter-Neal, who rides for Adidas.

If I had to take a guess, I'd say these shoes are going to have a Gravis feel to them. That's becasue Burton owns Gravis and DNA Distribution, which distributes Habitat. Not to say that's a bad thing, Arto left a pair of Gravis' at my friend's house, which I rocked for a quick minute, and ladies couldn't enough of MORINformed. Anyway, long story short Habitat's making shoes now, and here they are:

These are called the Quest.

These are called the Lark.

These are called the Ibex.

And these are called the Basin.

Five Questions Mike Gomez, Design Director at Matix Clothing

By: Jeff Mull

Can you talk a little bit about yourself, like where you're from, your background, that kind of stuff?

I'm 10 years deep as the design director at Matix. I'm 35 years old. I'm the product of a youth spent riding the public bus from The Valley in LA to Malibu and Zuma. I also spent about five years in Santa Barbara that I don't remember much of. But now I live in Venice.

How'd you find your way into apparel and other soft-good design?

It was a combination of some dumb luck, some desire to avoid a real job, and a little bit of help from some friends. Basically, I took some architecture classes in my school days, so I had a basic understanding of design as a technical skill. I also spent most of my younger days surfing and skating, and if you do anything long enough you end up knowing most of the people involved. So, long story short, I basically bumped into the right friend at the right time, and he thankfully took a chance on me.

Can you run me through a typical day in the office?

We're usually crammed in our dark design dungeon, running behind schedule. We get the occasional drop-in from Gabe Kling fresh out of the water and on his way to his next tropical destination. And we can usually hear Daewon skating the park out back while we slave away on his next jean sample. It is truly glamorous.

How far in advance do you work for producing a line?

We start drawing concepts over a year ahead of when product hits your local shop. It's hard to believe I guess,
but it takes a long time to draw then test and review and revise, and ultimately produce collections that are quality constructed, aesthetically interesting, proper fitting, and relevant to diverse global tastes.

I know it's a cliche question, but what inspires design at Matix?

The clich answer would be to try and claim some obscure, too-cool-for-school inspiration source. As if I have some secret ubercool lifestyle. The no-bullshit answer is that Matix is simply inspired by the guys on our team that go out and bust their ass and expand our concept of what is possible on skateboards/surfboards/snowboards. My job is to just take their styles and needs and mold it all into the collection that we call Matix.
