Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to the friends and family of Carl Reimer…

SANTA CRUZ — The last day of Carl Thomas Reimer’s life was a good one, his father said Sunday.
On Friday afternoon — hours before the 19-year-old was shot and killed near a Westside apartment complex — he’d surfed at Steamer Lane with one of his best friends.
The surf session was memorable because Reimer, who often competed in surf contests, landed the “backside 360” trick he’d been practicing for several months, said Joe Reimer, choking back tears while talking about his son outside the Columbia Street home where his son also lived.
“I saw him when he just got out of the water,” Joe Reimer said. “He gave me a hug. He was just glowing. It was a wonderful last day. He was on top of the world.”
Reimer, a 2009 Santa Cruz High School graduate, was shot three times around midnight Friday when he and a 15-year-old friend went to retrieve a skateboard and bike they had left in the park next to Mission Garden apartments on Grandview Street.
Reimer and his friend were walking through the park when they were confronted by the gunman, police said. Reimer was shot twice in the upper torso and once in the left arm. The 15-year-old was uninjured.
