2001 NSSA EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS

APRIL 20-22, 2001 SEBASTIAN INLET, FLORIDA ERIC TAYLOR WINS THE OPEN MENS FOR HIS 7TH EASTERN CROWN

SHANE UPCHURCH TAKES HIS FIRST NSSA TITLE IN THE OPEN JUNIORS

(April 27) – The National Scholastic Surfing Association held it’s ninth annual Eastern Championships April 20-22 at Sebastian Inlet, Florida. This was the eighth consecutive year that the NSSA Easterns was held at Sebastian Inlet – one of the most popular and premier surf spots on the East Coast. A solid 3-4 foot southeast wind swell produced fun, wedgy left and right peaks throughout the entire 3 day championship event. The NSSA Eastern Championships showcased over 400 leading surfers and bodyboarders from the NSSA’s Southeast, Southeast/North, Florida Gulf and Northeast Conferences. The NSSA Eastern Championships is a 6 star rated event which will seed NSSA east coast members into the 2001 NSSA National Championships June 26-June 30 at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2001 NSSA EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS- Eric Taylor, 17, of Vero Beach solidified his place in NSSA history by winning the Open Mens division and clinching his record 7th Eastern title. Brian Toth, 15 from Puerto Rico served notice that he can match up with the top Open Mens surfers and took 2nd behind Eric in the Open Mens final. Brian just missed out on the Open Juniors final with an equal 7th placing in the semis, but put on a sensational performance in the Explorer Juniors final to clinch his first career Eastern title.

– In the Open Juniors division, Shane Upchurch, 16 of Oak Island, NC pulled off a terrific come from behind victory by ripping a good set right in the final moments, collecting an excellent 8.5 score from the judges. Shane also took 2nd in the Explorer Juniors final.

– Two time National Champion Adam Wickwire, 13 of Satellite Beach won the Open Boys final for his second career Eastern title. Adam also took 2nd to Eric Geiselman in the Explorer Menehuene division. Eric 13, from New Smyrna posted one of the highest scoring waves of the Eastern finals in the Menehuene division, when he blasted three vertical off the lips scoring 8.5’s from the judges. Kris Wiernicki, 11 of Jensen Beach took his first NSSA championship title winning the Mini Grom division. Kris also scored an authentic CJ Hobgood surfboard for the outstanding “grom” performance of the Eastern Championships.

– Northeast Womens standout Jamie DeWitt took the Open Womens title and Elton Rivas won the Open Bodyboard division.

– Jerry Burdine of Miami Beach scored his first NSSA championship crown in the Explorer Mens division. Dylan Graves won the Explorer Boys title for his second career Easterns crown. Adrian Coloprete of Vero Beach successfully defended his Easterns title taking the Longboard win. Dan Worley took his first Easterns victory in Explorer Bodyboard. Kelly Hutchison of Hobe Sound scored the win in Explorer Womens.

– In the NSSA O’Neill SMAS Airshow Championships, Sterling Spencer executed the maneuver of the airshow launching a backside air 360 which earned an 8.0 score from the judges. Sterling will be the #1 east coast seed going into the NSSA O’Neill SMAS National Airshow Championships at Salt Creek on June 24. All six finalists from the Easterns airshow will be invited to participate in the National Airshow Championships along with the six finalists from the Hawaii and Western Airshow Championships.
