SEBASTIAN INLET, FLORIDA

CONDITIONS: 2-5 FEET

THE 2002 NSSA EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS AND ALL OF THE 2002 CHAMPIONSHIPSARE PROUDLY SPONSORED BY: HURLEY INTERNATIONAL, BODY GLOVE, SURFING,SURFING GIRL, BODYBOARDING, REEF, HUNTINGTON SURF AND SPORT, SOUTH BAYTOYOTA, OSMAS (ONEILL SURFING MAGAZINE AIRSHOW SERIES-NSSA DIVISION).

The top young surfers from the east coast turned out in record numbersat Sebastian Inlet to compete at the tenth annual NSSA EasternChampionships. Over 400 NSSA surfers competed for prestigious Easterntitles as well as contending for slots to the 2002 NationalChampionships in June at Lower Trestles. Strong 25 mph NE winds madefor challenging wave and weather conditions, but on the good side, thepersistent winds generated consistent, rippable 2-5 foot surf throughoutthe three-day event.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TENTH ANNUAL NSSA EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIPS:

TEN YEARS AT THE NSSA EASTERNS! -The NSSA celebrated its tenth year ofthe Eastern Championships and ninth year at terrific Sebastian Inlet, one of the premier surf breaks in the nation. The first Easterns washeld at New Smyrna Beach in 1993 before moving to its perfect home atSebastian Inlet. While the east coast can become the victim ofnotorious flat spells, the NSSA has been blessed with surf for tenstraight years!

EIGHT FOR ERIC-Eighteen year old Eric Taylor was donning a NSSA jerseyfor the last time at the Easterns so he wanted to close it out on a hugenote. Over the past seven years, Eric has carved out an illustriouscareer at the NSSA Easterns. With polished style and crisp verticalturns, Eric successfully defended his 2001 Open Mens title. Eric waspretty much unstoppable at Sebastian Inlet, not losing a single heat inboth the Open and Explorer divisions until the Explorer final where hetook second to David Awbrey. If the impressive surfing displays put onby Eric throughout the Easterns event is any indication, an east coastermay finally snag the Open gold at the Nationals.
