Gold Coast Queensland, Monday 21st June, 2010: The enduring popularity of 1999 world surfing champion Mark “Occy” Occhilupo is undeniable and with less than a month to go before his annual namesake event kicks off – the 2010 Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp, organizers are anticipating the biggest and best Occy’s Grom Comp to date.
Running from July 3-7, the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp has evolved into a truly international event with competitors travelling from Tasmania, Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, and Queensland along with international surfers from South Africa, New Zealand, Tahiti and Japan.
Now in its seventh year, the event annually attracts a host of the world’s elite grommets with past contestants including Tyler Wright, Sarah Mason, Ryan Callinan and Jack Freestone just to name a few of the surfers who’ve gone on to make inroads at a Pro Junior, WQS and even World Tour level.
This year, across the five divisions of U/12 Boys, U/14 Boys & Girls and U/16 Boys & Girls some of the surfing world’s best up-and-comers including Mitchel Parkinson (Coolangatta, Qld), Kai Hing (Wurtulla Beach, Qld), Creed McTaggart (Margaret River, WA), Nikki Van Dijk (Phillip Island, Vic) and Ellie-Jean Coffey (Crescent Head, NSW) will be just a few of the big names headlining a star-studded lineup of future world surfing superstars.
Surfing Queensland Chief Executive Officer Scott Gillies said the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp continues to be a proven stepping stone for juniors aspiring to a professional surfing career.
“You only have to look at the list of past winners and competitors to see that the Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp is a proven development pathway for the next generation of Australian surfing champions,” said Gillies.
“The popularity of the event also continues to go from strength to strength and this year we’ve received well over 240 entries with only very limited spots still available, so we can’t wait to kick things off and we know the kids are feeling the same way,” he said.
The event will also have the man himself Mark Occhilupo heavily involved throughout the event, with Occy set to surf in the SONY expression session, sign some autographs and cast an eye over the next crop of surfing champions across the five-day competition.
SONY will also be on the lookout for competitors making the “Biggest” impact throughout the event, rewarding the Biggest Turn, Biggest Air, Biggest Heat Score and Biggest Performance etc with daily prizes.
There will also be plenty of Sony gear handed out with “Dig to Win” beach games happening throughout the event.
The Billabong Occy’s Grom Comp is proudly supported by Billabong, SONY, Virgin Blue, Volkswagen and Surfing Queensland. Competitors and spectators can call the Surfing Queensland Event Hotline after 6:30am each morning of competition for start times and location Ph# 07 30306388.
