How To Do Frontside Reverses
Words by Pascal Stansfield
“Your body and board will automatically follow your head.”
Approach the lip just as you would in a standard off-the-lip attempt.
Instead of projecting yourself down the line, try to kick the tail out the back of the wave into a skateboard-like lipslide position. To kick the tail out the back of the wave effectively, take the weight off your back foot halfway through the turn and transfer your weight entirely to your front foot while simultaneously turning your head in the direction you wish to spin. Your body and board will automatically follow your head.
This will enable your board to pivot on the lip. Keep your weight on the front foot until the spin has brought you into the backward position.
Once you’ve reached the 180-degree position, place some weight onto the back foot equaling the weight of the front¿this will give you complete balance.
As you begin to ride backward fakie, keep your center of balance low. Your fins will begin to catch and the board will begin to turn another 180 degrees. Keep your eyes on the direction in which you’re spinning and simply ride it out. You’ve just completed a textbook reverse.
