Last year on March 11 & 12 the Ventura Surf Club held a surf contest at California St. to benefit Arden Taylor who was suffering from terminal brain cancer.
The event was a huge success thanks to all of the participation. We, the Ventura Surf Club want to show our gratitude by holding the Arden Taylor Surf Benefit every year while making this event in memory of / or to benefit a member of a different club.
This year will be the Arden Taylor II in Memory of Mark McCoy, a member from the WindAnSea surf club who passed away last year. Every year the proceeds will be split amongst different charities. Arden’s family or charity will always receive at least 10%. The new name (in this case being Mark McCoy’s family or charity) will receive 50% for the 1st year and 10% for each of the following 2 years – Then a new name and club for the Arden III.
The idea is simple. We all have in common the love of the ocean and the indescribable zest for riding the gift of Mother Nature – waves. It’s a bond that links us all together. So every year this contest will indirectly affect all of us.
Eventually down the line it will directly affect you or one of your club members who may be in need of help. This is what we are all here for. The Arden Taylor Benefit is scheduled for March 17 & 18th, 2001. Please keep your calendar open for these dates. Once again the contest is open to everyone, not just clubs.
Also, on the first day of the contest around 11:00am, we will have a huge paddle-out in memory of Arden Taylor and Mark McCoy. In the center of the circle we are going to have two wreaths, one for Arden and one for Mark.
With the permission of the King family we would like to have a third wreath – one for Syrus. If anyone from his family or from his club would like to carry the wreath we would be honored to have them do so. You do not have to be a contestant to join in the paddle-out.
