Under the Sun (West Coast Premiere!)
Written and directed by Cyrus Sutton, Under the Sun is a feature-length documentary about two cultures on Australia’s eastern coast. The Gold Coast is home to Superbank, one of the world’s most perfect waves, and the highest concentration of professional competitive surfers on the planet. But travel only an hour south and you’ll find Byron Bay, hippy mecca and home to a small group of the finest corporately-commissioned free surfers on Earth. To outsiders, the cultural divide is obvious. But beneath the surface lies a tale of conflict, ambition, and the creation of a way of life which became a multi-billion dollar industry. The film stars Mick Fanning, Beau Young and Dean Morrison with special appearances by Rabbit Bartholomew, Peter Townend and Nat Young. Under the Sun screens Saturday, April 26th at 8:30 p.m.
One California Day
From filmmakers Jason Baffa and Mark Jeremias comes a story about surf culture and tradition. One California Day is a visual journey through six distinct coastal regions, capturing the California surfing experience through the surfers who live it. Shot in brilliant super 16mm color film, the movie examines the variety of subtle differences that make California so unique. Starring Joel Tudor, the Mallory brothers, Joe Curren, Tyler Warren and Alex Knost with special appearances by Tom Curren and Greg Noll. One California Day screens Tuesday, April 29th at 3:30 p.m.
The award-winning Sliding Liberia follows four young surfers as they travel through the war-torn West African nation of Liberia in search of perfect waves. With the recent war written in the landscape, the group must face the everyday realities of life in a post-conflict world, where security is never taken for granted. The search for waves becomes a quest for understanding, and the surfers record the stories of Liberians they meet along the journey. Juxtaposing war-torn urban landscapes with images of tropical paradise, the film explores the tension that exists inside every traveler—a desire to connect with new people and places, and an instinct to insulate oneself from the harsh realities of the surroundings. Combining a classic surf aesthetic with a social documentary ethos, ‘Sliding Liberia’ reverses basic assumptions and gives a voice to the people who live in this surfer’s paradise. Sliding Liberia screens Tuesday, April 29th at 7:00 p.m.
