“Perfect for Flat Days” – Xcel’s Bede Durbidge on becoming PADI Certified Diver

HALEIWA, OAHU, HAWAII – SEPTEMBER 29, 2009 – ASP World Tour surfer Bede Durbidge is now a PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certified diver, having recently completed the PADI Open Water course with Sundive Dive Centre in the waters of Byron Bay, Australia.
“You’ve definitely got to try [diving] and get certified,” said Durbidge after completing the course. “It’s a whole other world down there – you won’t be disappointed.”
Durbidge made time between World Tour stops to hook up with PADI on his home turf and earn his PADI certification. Now making his fifth ‘CT appearance, Durbidge – a world-class rider who counts a Triple Crown championship among his many accolades – was naturally drawn to the diving world, as a lifelong surfer passionate and excited about being in the water.
“Surfing and diving have one really special thing in common,” continued Durbidge. “Whether you’re down underwater, or on top surfing, you’re only thinking in the moment … you have no distractions, it just clears your mind of everything so you can enjoy the experience.”
“Plus, it’s perfect for flat days when there are no waves.”
