Big Wave Surfer Sion Milosky Passes Away At Mavericks
Yesterday afternoon Kauai’s Sion Milosky died while surfing Mavericks in Northern California. The news spread like wildfire at the Josh Kerr movie premiere in Newport Beach, another one of Kauai’s favorite sons had passed away. Fellow Mavericks surfer Ken Collins, who was surfing with Sion at the time, told the San Jose Mercury News that Sion had caught six waves and was dominating the low tide, evening session before falling and enduring a two-wave hold down. According to the report, Nathan Fetcher went into rescue mode and hopped onto a jet ski, finding Milosky’s lifeless body floating near the harbor entrance, which is nearly a mile from the wave.
One of (if not the) hardest charging surfers in the world Sion will be greatly missed by his family and friends. As the news spread around last night in Newport, I saw Mike Parsons, a friend of Sion’s and fellow big wave guy and asked him if he’d heard the news. He had and his face proved it. He went on to tell me that at low tide, Mavericks doesn’t let you up after a fall, there’s something about how the reef is laid out that makes it so you just can’t surface.
Sion graced the cover and spreads of many surf magazines in the last year and at the age of 35 was in the midst of a blossoming surfing career. A father of two daughters and married, Sion was the epitome of the aloha spirit and possessed no ego or machismo, he just loved surfing big waves. Our prayers are with Sion’s family and friends.
Below are some of the heartfelt messages going around on Twitter and Facebook…

R.I.P Sion Milosky
It’s shattering. Sion was one of the best guys at Pipe and a guy who lived to surf big waves. He always had a friendly word for you whenever he saw you, and was a real family guy with daughters a similar age to mine.
