Billabong Pro Tahiti: Day 3 Highs And Lows
Tahiti is a funny place in that conditions and weather can go from the prettiest thing you’ve ever seen to hellacious, windblown, rainy slop in the blink of an eye. On day three of the Billabong Pro Tahiti, contestants were rudely greeted with the latter. I’ve been out there more times than I care to remember when all you want to do is go back to your adopted house and watch a movie while hiding out from the rain and wind. You can’t blame today’s poor weather on the new dates the event runs because in reality, the weather is so wild and unpredictable on the southern tip of Tahiti that pinning blame on anyone would be unfair. Regardless of the slop on offer, a few of the boys on tour had to put their heads down and get to work on day three at Chopes…
That said, just when you think the day is a wash and you’re midway through the second season of Gossip Girl, the clouds part, the wind backs off, and two-foot Chopes looks, well, pretty fun.
The crappy conditions allowed office drones like myself to actually get some work done as opposed to the last two days where production came to a screeching halt and our internet connection was slowed down by everyone watching the comp…
Pat Gudauskas saved his spot on the World Tour with one of his patented rodeo flips that the judges generously awarded an 8 something. His opponent, Chris “Davo” Davidson (below) was seen punching the shit out of his board just after the score was announced. We like that.
The comp was called off for the day after just a few heats, check back tomorrow—hopefully it’ll end with a bang.
