The ASP World Championship Tour's 8th ranked surfer, Bobby Martinez, has finally come to terms on a sponsor. The Santa Barbara native, and the best goofy footer Rincon has ever been sliced and smacked by, will now be surfing the world with the O'Neill logo on his board. He joins fellow World Championship Tour surfers Jordy Smith and Timmy Reyes, and globe trotting free-surfer Cory Lopez on the program over at the surf industry giant.

For the past year or so, Bobby was hailed as the "most sought after 'free agent' in professional surfing," having competed the entire 2009 season without a clothing sponsor, which is unheard of. As a result of having no clothing sponsor, Bobby surfed most of his heats naked, which was becoming a real distraction, and a major issue at ASP meetings. Meeting after meeting, things like "If I have to see one more Bobby Martinez bottom turn from the channel, I'm joining Bruce," and "It'd be OK if it was Alana Blanchard."

Alright, so the naked part isn't true, but what is true is Bobby Martinez now has an apparel and wetsuit sponosr. In other O'Neill news, they may have gained a Bobby, but they lost three Gudauskas', as in Pat, Tanner and Dane, who will all be wearing Vans products from head-to-toe.

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
