Healey Gets Face To Face With A Tiger Shark

By: Tom Morin

Mark Healey is madman, whether he's taking off backside at maxed out Waimea Bay, pulling into bombs at Pipeline, or towing into some of the biggest waves Earth has to offer, he's always pushing the limits. And it's not limited just to surfing. He's an accomplished spearfisherman, and is constantly handling sketchy situations nonchalantly. He was telling me one time, he shot a fish, the cord wrapped around his arm, and the fish swam under the reef, pretty much pinning him to the bottom. He calmly reached for his knife and cut himself free. He also frequently comes face to face with Tiger sharks and isn't phased, he calmly swims next to them, as they check each other out.

This past winter while on a solo spearfishing mission, he shot an ono (Wahoo), and tied it to his jet ski. Then, like the nut that he is, he began chumming. Let's recap the situation, he's out in the middle of the ocean, by himself, he has a dead fish tied to his jet ski, and he's surrounding himself with fish blood and guts. I don't think I have to tell you what that's going to attract. Check out the clip below from his weekly video over at Quiksilver:

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
