Carissa is Moore than just a good surfer

By: Chris Mauro, GrindTV.com

She may be a red-hot 17-year-old rookie, but when it's all said and done, Carissa Moore won't be defined by her cutback. She drilled that point home on Thursday after winning the second ASP tour event of her young surfing career.

While accepting her trophy, Moore donated her entire $15,000 earnings to the local Waitara Bar Boardriders Club, a place where more than 180 kids hang out in a safe environment and are groomed in all things ocean related. The club, which is staffed by an small army of volunteers, does wonders for keeping those kids out of trouble.

The gift is a ringing endorsement to those volunteers who've spent countless hours renovating the once condemned building into a safe and comfortable hangout. It also speaks volumes to the job they're doing with the kids, who Moore fell in love with during her brief stay in New Zealand.

"The Haka that the Waitara Bar Boardriders Club performed before the event was beautiful and they've really opened up their community and waves to us," she said, explaining her gesture. "For this, I am very thankful."

Moore actually lives up to the role model standard. An accomplishment that's all the more impressive considering her surfing prowess placed her under microscope of media and marketing machines at the age of 12. Yet even today, as one of the most well-known surfers in the sport, she maintains the same sweet and disarming personality she had as a sixth grader There's zero trace of entitlement in the way she walks, talks or carries herself.

And that's no accident.

Years ago I spoke to her father Chris Moore about what the biggest struggles were in raising an athletic prodigy of sorts. He quickly put his daughter's talents in perspective by listing the only two things he cared about: Carissa having fun with her surfing and doing well in school. He was serious, too.

"I'm trying to raise a good human being," he said. "Not a good surfer."

Discussing the road ahead of her that day, he knew the gap between the two was often significant.
And in the years since, Carissa's inner circle has done a stellar job of keeping those wanting a piece of her at arms length. Granted, their protective instincts haven't always gone over well with the media, marketing directors or even coaches, but there's no denying it's paid off.

Carissa is already one of the top ranked women in the world, and she's not even due to graduate from Punahou High School (President Obama's alma mater) until this June.

Today Carissa Moore knows as well as anyone how fortunate she is to be surfing for a living. She has a deep understanding of the circumstances that helped pave the way for her rise, and clearly, she'll do whatever she can to help others get the same.

Needless to say, pro surfing could use a few more like Moore.

Ry Craike searches Taiwan for high quality surf

The obvious joke to be made here is that products commonly manufactured in Taiwan have a tendency to lack in quality, due to cheap labor and materials, while ironically, the waves produced there can be world class.

Here Ry Craike bravely navigates the sea of crappy household items to find some watery nuggets.

Nice to see. Even more impressive in some ways than the football player that donated 2 million to University of Nebraska -- This is her whole paycheck, and in a sport where even many professionals struggle to pay the bills. Awesome.

That's just it - her inner circle keeps that media stuff down to a min. so she can be herself. So she's not making tons of money off a bunch of endorsements.
I think that her father has the right idea - he's raising a good person - not a commodity for the media marketers.

This gal and others that are like her are an inspiration. Wish that some of those that have plenty would think about giving back directly to great groups and clubs. Give back so others can have that chance to succeed too.

Hundreds of thousands? ASP athletes are not exactly raking it in on endorsements nor are they paid like the NFL. Not even close. Almost all pro surfers cover all their own travel expenses, hotels, etc. when they leave home to participate in a contest. Carissa goes to a public school in Hawai’i... a real good indication that she and her parents are not riding high on her earnings. It is sad when clueless people who know nothing about surfing try to diminish this young woman’s selfless act of extraordinary generosity. Yes, sometimes people do good things for others with zero pretense or hidden agenda. I admire not only Carissa’s skill, but her humility. You go girl!

the girl top ten surfers are raking hefty endorsement deals, they make all of their money off of sponsorships not contest.

And you are the clueless one, what you are talking about Punahou is a very expensive private school here on Oahu which cost almost 20k a year to attend.

I didnt say she isnt a cool girl, or very generous you guys are just blowing her up WAY bigger then she should be acting like she doesnt have the means to give and she does. And trust me I know plenty about surfing

Footballxpaul, there's nothing wrong with a little publicity. Charitable organizations need it just as much as celebrities. Plus, in the world of news where most reports are of death, destruction, and scandal -- it's nice to read about something POSITIVE every once in awhile. Especially if it reminds us that we, too, can make a difference in helping others.

Studies have shown that when disaster strikes, large charities take center stage and receive most of the money from people's donations to aid in relief efforts, which of course should be number one priority. But during these times, smaller charities and local nonprofits suffer the most, as they are often forgotten. It's generous people like Carissa who remind us not to forget the little guys.

She donated all her money to keeping those New Zealand kids out of trouble? I didn't realize shearing sheep and eating vegemite sandwiches were so troublesome. I guess, what, with all the idyllic ghettos and rampant kiwi eating in New Zealand, I'd be worried about those kids, too. I'm sure her "heart is in the right place", but give me a break. There are children in the US who could've really benefited from this (Boys and Girls Clubs, City Year, Make A Wish Foundation, etc).

First of all, FDS, grow a brain. And while you're at it, grow a pair of eyes so you can actually see the world outside your bubble. Poverty exists all over the world, regardless of race or geographic location, and especially in countries with a history of indigenous peoples being ousted and marginalized by imperialist nations. Even though there are a bunch of "white kids" in that picture as well as "kids of color" doesn't mean that they deserve less than what kids get here -- especially an after-school program that keeps them out of trouble.

I've worked with organizations like the Boys and Girls Club, and trust me, they're doing just fine -- especially with their fieldtrips, and pool tables, cell phones and ipods. And if you're arguing on the principle of "let's send money to the poorest kids who REALLY need it" --- U.S. organizations and charities wouldn't see a dime, as third world countries would rake it in.

The point is, unless your donating more than $15,000 to poor kids with AIDS in Africa or barefoot children around the world who can't get clean water let alone afford shoes, then shut your trap. The fact that this girl is unselfishly giving her money away to a higher cause is an inspiration and reminder that all charitable organizations, great or small, need as much support as they can get.

Holy cow. Some folks would find something devious about the car starting in the morning. Open your mind people...this girl obviously is excellent at her sport and also has plenty of fans, I understand there are some die hards on the planet that look at a selfless move like his mother just sprouted an arm out of her forehead, with complete lack of understanding.
Well, the good news is you could understand. All you need to do, is give the "bum" outside the 7/11 a buck or two instead of walking away muttering, "useless dope fiends wasting good sidewalk space, they outta have them all kil...". Then, the next day, do a random act of kindness. Or you could help out the guy at the corner with no legs who is a vet, instead of thinking, "those people make more in a year that most Americans". Well, shit. The thing is, you all probably have a few bucks to spare. My point: for the Carrie "stunt", you have no point of reference, obviously, which means you should create one. IT FEELS GOOD TO GIVE. The Universe sends chills all through your bod and your heart and your center kind of melt together. And believe me, Carrie does not need any false publicity. So, your assignment is to give that "stupid junkie" a sawbuck next time you see him. Tell yourself: well, he obviously is currently beyond cleanup and go to work, maybe he is really alone in the world. Maybe that fiver is gonna provide some Maddog to keep him warm tonight...Dana

I am a wandering commentator. I can say that I was speaking more to the principal of the "type" and was really stoked by what she did, after all, any community center that keeps latchkey kids off the streets, where all the B.S. can eat the heart right out of them, is usually woefully understaffed, and volunteers are a big part of it. So, in my book, yes, good for her, good for them and good for me, because in my world right now, I am not currently able to surround myself with like minded folks. Well, I was not, I had to get over some shocks in my life, but I have been enjoying putting comments in and lacing them with what I believe it, it is certainly helping me to regroup after a serious life change that had left me reeling. As for watching Girls Surfing, I cannot afford ESPN. I am a BIG lover of the movie about it though. It is one of the the spine tinglers that make me glad to be alive. Also, having been out to open sea back in the day when I did commercial fishing in AK, I know what Mama Ocean can hand out, and I have double respect for those who manage to learn to cooperate with her. Thank you for the comment. D

I am so grateful to see her fearless giving! I think Carissa is fearless about giving because she knows God blesses those who give. What I love is that she didn't just give money, she gave her heart, joy, love, beauty, truth and even humbleness. It's all in the Good Word. If we all had that much faith in giving we could move mountains of bad ideas out of our world and replace them with good and wonderful ideas.

Carrissa is the embodiment of the hero.
To exercise free will and display it in the form of charity is the highest order of freedom. It should never be forced by others under the guise of doing the right thing for those less fortunate-that is oppression, which is why we have the US Constitution so that we are a willing giver of our blessings. This is the construct that allows for any individual to be the hero- to bestow their blessings for the greater good because they choose to do so.
May we all aspire to her level by the path of free will.
