Landscape Altered Episode : the last

By: Janos Palko

Landscape Altered - Episode 4 from Kustom Airstrike on Vimeo.

Here is the final chapter of Kai Neville's mini-series, Landscape Altered. The aim of this expedition was to assemble a crew of aerial pilots on an off-season Mentawai boat trip with the goal of taking out the Kustom Airstrike $50,000. This final episode takes on a "epilogue" feel as the boys describe the array of injuries sustained while trying to pull the craziest air of the year. In the end Josh Kerr reckons that the 50k is still up for grabs despite some seriously ridiculous whips by Clay, Josh, and Chippa. At the 2:55 mark Clay rides a wave that would have had an asp judge drooling: he threads a long forehand tube, then emerges to do 3 absolutely insane top turns in a row, fins flying everywhere, all of them unique yet fully committed. The level of surfing in these episodes is beyond comprehension. The one question that remains: are any of these tricks worthy of the 50k for the craziest maneuver of the year? "Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
