Attack of the Brazilian Goofyfoots - US Open Day 7

By: Janos Palko

Brazil's trio of lanky fin-throwers dominated again on day 7 of the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach.

The morning started with Gabriel Medina, Miguel Pupo and Jadson Andre in consecutive heats, and the three stunt pilots seemed to feed off each other.

All three won their heats in impressive fashion, pushing WCT leaders Jordy Smith, Bede Durbidge, and Mick Fanning into second place. Luckily for the stunned WCT-ers, the top 2 surfers advance into Saturday's man-on-man Round of 16.

As for the rest of the field, Florida's young gun Evan Gieselman had a shocker and was unable to land any of his signature air-reverses, thus falling to Cory Lopez and the suddenly hot Nic Muscroft in heat 4.

Dane Reynolds was able to sneak past Owen Wright in a low scoring heat that was more of a battle for last rather than air superiority. Nate Curran trailed early before pulling out two solid scores in the dying minutes, leaving Reynolds in second and knocking Wright out of the comp.

Kelly Slater put on another solid show for the crowd, winning his heat over Brazilians Adriano de Souza and Heitor Alves.

Defending US Open champion Brett Simpson won heat 8, advancing along with compatriot Pat Gudauskas. The draws for the Round of 16 are quite interesting, and the swell is on the rise Saturday which means there will be some serious fireworks.

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
