Chippa Wilson Is So NOW

By: Jeff Mull

Australia's Chippa Wilson bolted onto the surfscape like a bat out of hell recently. Within the past year, the 22-year-old has gained the notoriety of being one of the most tech surfers alive, standing out on an all-star Kustom Air Strike trip with Kai Neville and the most talented surfers around while ushering surfing into a new age. Needless to say, when Chippa moves, we watch. Closely.

As the latest installment of Analog's Moving Picture Project, Chippa's teamed up with cinematographer Riley Blakeway to put together a toe-tapping and eye-searing flick aptly entitled NOW that's sure to bring his brand of detailed surfing to the masses. After taking a gander at the teaser, we're hooked.

In a recent interview with STAB, Wilson commented on the film and the much hyped Big Spin that's in top contention for the Kustom Air Strike award and a cool $50,000 that goes to the winner. "I've been doing a few backside big spins. It's a skateboarding move. They're pretty hard--it's a 360" shuv-it and you do a 180 in the midst of it, so it's kinda tricky."

Judging from the trailer, the film looks remarkably colorful and the surfing looks top-shelf. Needless to say, we'll be attending the premiere and taking notes.

Hollywood producers only expected a few minor challenges when giving the story of legendary big-wave surfer, Jay Moriarty, the green-light. Clearly, they underestimated the task at hand.
