A Triple Crown Tribute to Andy

By: Chris Mauro, GrindTV.com

Andy Irons was supposed to be playing a spoiler role this month in Hawaii. His plan when he left Puerto Rico earlier this month, was to get home and rest up for the final three events of the season.

The three-time world champion was a huge force on his home turf, winning the prestigious Triple Crown of Surfing four times.

Now we're left wondering what might have been, still trying to find the balance between mourning his loss and celebrating his incredible life.

There are several tributes to Andy out there floating in the internet ether, all of them very moving. But as the Triple Crown got underway the producers of the morning show decided they'd dedicate a special episode to Andy, the same day ceremonies were being held in his honor all over the world.

For the most part, this episode flew under the radar. I hadn't seen it until today. But if you have time (it's an hour long) I recommend you sit and watch. There are incredible flashback segments that will throw you back on the roller coaster ride that was Andy's amazing journey...

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.

Here we go again! Put athletes on a pedestal. There are thousands of people who die daily and have done more for society as a whole than some surfer dude! Yes, it was sad to leave behind an unborn child and his life coming to an end. The memorial was great, but one is enough already!

Tributes all around the world...for a guy who surfs for a living? WOW!!

zach your an idiot its not like the whole world as countrys are mourning mainly the surfing community. He has done great things for communities in hawaii and other parts of the world donating to funds and things and starting organizations. He was a great surfer. And the reason why so many people mourn his death is that he was an inspirational person and many people knew about him. yes many people die everyday, and people mourn for them but not in the masses because not many people know about them. Theres nothing wrong with that honoring him. Is honoring him affecting your life so terribly?? I feel sorry for you. And maybe since you feel that way so harshly about someone maybe no one should mourn your death.
