the North Shore's Imperfect Mutants

By: Janos Palko

Here we have another installment of Volcom's Proving Grounds series documenting life on the North Shore during the winter of '10/'11. In this episode Bruce and JD Irons get creative when the surf is less than perfect. JD surfs a funky fickle reform near Sunset Beach that I wont name because I'd like to surf it next time im on Oahu. He actually gets some seriously fun TUBES. Far from the CITY.

Next we get a glimpse into the life of Bruce Irons, the crowned prince of the North Shore. Pipe is wild and out of control, third reefing with nobody out. He makes a phone call and within minutes, several large Hawaiians are dragging a jetski through the bushes so Bruce can do step-offs at lethal sized backdoor. By the way, launching your own jetski on the beach at Pipe, with the help of the county lifeguards, is the kind of thing that would ONLY happen for someone like Bruce.

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
