Billabong XXL Nominees

By: Janos Palko

For those of us who enjoy watching the misfortunes of others, the Billabong XXL Awards are a delightful display of carnage that comes but once a year. I could watch the WIPEOUT OF THE YEAR nominees on repeat for about a week. From Mark Mathews' aquatic apocalypse at Shipstern's to Laurie Towner's runaway freight train at Cloudbreak, the entertainment value is undeniable. The XXL awards transport us back to the days of roman gladiators fighting lions in the coleseum, with droves of peasants clamoring for a view of the spectacle. The computer screen is our coleseum and these gentlemen are our new gladiators.

The winners will be announced on April 29, at the Grove in Anaheim for the 11th annual Billabong XXL Big Wave Awards party. This year the awards will be webcast live, and aired on FuelTV on Sunday May 1 at 9pm.

Here are the nominees for RIDE OF THE YEAR and WIPEOUT OF THE YEAR.

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
