Marketing 101 with Hayden Shapes

By: Janos Palko

In this age of digital media and internets and social networking, to be successful at anything you need to market yourself. Whether you're a professional surfer, clothing company, or even a surfboard shaper, you need to find your audience and then speak to them.

Australia's Hayden Cox of Hayden Shapes has done a pretty damn good job of just that. If you have some spare time, cruise over to his vimeo page, you'll notice a bunch of content. 14 videos. Big deal, plenty of shapers film their riders, some have even figured out how to use the internet and post them. Hayden, however, has taken the time (and coin I'm sure) to get a talented filmer/editor and pump out some seriously awesome clips, well shot, good music, creatively edited. The viewer is then able to forget that these videos are, in essence, ads. If you want people to watch your videos, make videos that people would want to watch.

And, knowing his audience well, Hayden even threw in some completely gratuitous hot teenage ass. Despite being completely unnecessary, the nubile female form is the oldest trick in the book when it comes to re-charging an attention span. bravo.

Furthermore, Hayden's website features a blog that has some creatively shot photos of the everyday happenings around his factory and his team. What more could an ADD surf bum who lives through a computer ask for?

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
