Bruce Irons Flaring

By: Janos Palko

Here I go, making that "coolest thing I've ever seen" claim once again. I know. I know. Yes, I am aware I do this.

The Aussie geniuses over at STAB mag. have blown my mind again, this time with flares. The cover of their last issue featured a flaming Jordy Smith aerial, and in keeping with this trend, they busted out the flares on a recent Mentawai boat trip, this time with Bruce Irons as the test dummy.

Then they even released a little video of it, along with an excerpt from an interview with Bruce about his brother, the first since his tragic death in November.

The flares in the tube shots are unbelievable...

More over on stab here.

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
