Rip Curl's 2011 GromSearch East Coast highlights

Rip Curl's yearly Grom Search series has become quite a big deal for young guns around the globe trying to make a career out in the ocean.

In the USA, there are 4 regional events, California, Hawaii, Florida, and North Carolina, followed by the national championships to be held during the Rip Curl Search WCT event, at Ocean Beach in San Francisco in early November.

The last of the 4 regional events went down last weekend on the Outer Banks in NC, check out more photos from Surfing magazine's Daniel Pullen here.

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
