14th Annual Toes on the Nose Rabbit Kekai Longboard Classic

By: Nate Hoppes

Taking any opportunity to recognize the art of longboarding we turn our attention to Duke's OceanFest is held each summer in Waikiki in honor of Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku, who is fondly remembered today as an exemplary human being and the greatest waterman who ever lived. For the 10th anniversary of OceanFest the famous Toes on the Nose Rabbit Kekai Longboard Classic came back to Waikiki, the hometown of its namesake luminary, Albert Rabbit Kekai.

The longboarding event is all about celebrating Rabbit and his legacy, he's a god in Waikiki, so it made sense to hold the contest there.

Reigning ASP world longboard champion Duane Desoto moved one step closer to clinching a second world title, taking first place in the Toes on the Nose Rabbit Kekai Longboard Classic.

Desoto, 34, from Makaha, has been a competitor since the tender age of four and has competed in all 10 years of OceanFest. Small, inconsistent waves at Queens Surf today meant that he had to employ all 30 years of competitive savvy and experience to outpace three seasoned rivals in the 30-minute final.

Desoto won $2,000 today, followed by second placed Kamu Auwae (Makaha), Scotty Fong Jr. (Honolulu), third, and Keegan Edwards (Honolulu), fourth.

FINAL:
1ST Duane Desoto
2nd Kamu Auwae
3rd Scotty Fong Jr

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
