Jamie Sterling's 2010-2011 season

By: Janos Palko

Hawaiian charger Jamie Sterling was crowned 2010-11 Big Wave World Champion last May, and GoPro just cut this awesome video documenting his amazing year. Jamie dedicated his big win to close friend and fellow competitor Sion Milosky, who lost his life at Mavericks earlier this year. The Big Wave World Tour consists of 3 events in Oregon, Peru and Chile, and is looking to add more events in the future, as big wave paddling has undergone a resurgence in recent years. This video shows us Jamie's journey to the events, as well as his true passion- hunting down the deadliest waves he can find. Enjoy.

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
