Round Three has come and gone, and with it the much anticipated Dane Reynolds V Jordy Smith showdown. Both surfers ironically banged up in the same fashion with matching rib-ouchies. Dane in his first event of the year after a brief 'lost interest' hiatus, and Jordy trying desperately to claw his way back into the title race after missing the last 2 events with the aforementioned rib wound.Not exactly a shoot-out, as both surfers only ended up with two scoring rides each, Jordy getting his two in the first half of the heat, Dane on the other hand, and in typical fashion, struggled for the entire heat before getting into rhythm at the end of the heat. This time, he would fall just short on his last try, and, once again in typical fashion, it was not for lack of trying.
Jordy stayed out of the air for the most part, instead using rail gouges to net his scores, not willing to risk an air in the less than consistent conditions.
Needing a 5.66 with minutes remaining, Jordy allows Dane to snag a solid righthander under his priority. Dane smashes two massive fins out top turns, almost sealing the score he needs at this point. Eyeing the next section, and only really needing to connect the dots to seal the victory, he launches a lofty slob air instead and gets bucked off on the landing. The score comes in at a 5.33.
In Dane's Round Two battle with Adriano De Souza three days ago, Dane safety-surfed a good right, only needing a small score.
It worked and he won. Perhaps he was playing to Adriano's game, perhaps it was a rare moment of competitive fire. Either way, Dane made it very clear he does not enjoy winning in that fashion.
Go big or go home. Today Dane's going home, and he's probably not that bummed about it.
