Alex Gray and his scary summer

By: Janos Palko

Our comrades over at Body Glove just sat down with rider Alex Gray to discuss his summer exploits. Turns out the guy had a real hum-dinger, scoring standout performances during the two biggest swells of the season in Tahiti and Fiji, swells which will be talked about for a long time to come. The fiji swell was enough to keep Kelly Slater out J-Bay, and the Tahiti swell so big they had to call off the contest.

Easily the biggest Cloudbreak and Teahupoo ever surfed, and Alex nabbed bombs on both days. Respect.

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
