VQS Championships Wrap-up

By: Tom Morin

VQS
As usual the The Championships of the Volcom Totally Crustaceous Surf Tour, or simply the VQS Championships, went off with a bang. It seems like every year this contest has the same conditions, kind of overcast, some swell, but a lot of texture on the water due to the wind. The closed-out conditions weren't ideal for putting it on rail, but they certainly didn't hinder taking to the sky. Almost every Final turned into an air show, even the groms were punting big airs.

Oh yeah, and Tom Curren surfed a few heats, enough said. Here's a few of my personal highlights of the Hillbilly Stomp:

- I cant stress this enough, Curren was there. He made it to Semi's, and every time he was in a heat all you would here on the beach is, "Curren is surfing, Curren is surfing." He's still everyone's favorite surfer.

- Besides the ultimate legend, it was cool to see the likes of: Gavin Beschen, Shawn "Barney" Barron and Tai Van Dyke cruising the comp all weekend.

- Nate Tyler is rad, I was stoked that he won the Pro/Am

- Mitch Coleborn made the Final. He's one of the most progressive guys out there right now, and the one surfer in the event I wanted to see surf the most. Since he made it to the very last heat, I got to see him surf plenty.

- The commentators were funny as hell, as usual.

- The BBQ/House Parties are always all time during the VQS Championships. Newport Beach has some of the hottest girls around.

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
