Meditarranean Mission

By: Janos Palko

It's no secret that the Atlantic Ocean dishes out more than its share of solid surf, France, Spain, Morocco, Portugal, the list of European hotspots for waves is quite familiar.

Well believe it or not, the Mediterranean Sea is capable of similar feats, despite the fact that it's basically a big salt-water lake.

After a recent score in Morocco, Ben Sanchis and fellow Euro TIm Boal made a risky strike mission to surf the points and reefs near Monaco. Yes, that Monaco. In France, next to Cannes, where you're likely to find more million-dollar yachts than surf boards.

Still, despite expectations, they actually find phenomenal waves. And the clip opens with a night out on the town, which in Monaco means supermodels crowd surfing on inflatable boats and Steve Aoki bringing the house down.

C'est La vie.

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
