Volcom Pipe Pro gets underway

By: Janos Palko

"Warriors" is the term Volcom has used to describe contestants in the Volcom Pipe Pro, and after just over a day of competition, they've earned it. It's been a battle.

Day 1 saw a rapidly building swell and some downright terrifying conditions.

California's Ricky Whitlock broke his back while the contest was on hold. (he's gonna be ok) Kauai's Stephen Koehne nearly bled to death after suffering a massive knee gash during his trials heat on day 1, just before the event was called off due to massive surf. There was carnage aplenty.

The event was called back on yesterday in windy 6-8 foot peaks. Standout of the day was Chris Ward, who was able to thread 2 long backdoor tubes to combo the field with the day's highest heat score, 19.00 out of 20.

With another monster swell filling in as we speak, the event has been postponed for the day, but look for competition to resume once this swell maxes out.

Matt Banting Wins Australian Open

17 yr old aussie takes both jr and men's division

Yesterday, seventeen-year-old Australian Matt Banting won the Australian Open of Surfing for the second time.

With a flurry of fin-wafts and aerial variations, Banting was able to trump the entire field of both the pro junior and 6-star open men's divisions.

Florida's Evan Geiselman came within a hair of taking the men's title from Banting in a hotly contested final. In the end, Geiselman's 15.83 was bested by Banting's 16.83.

Banting's double-victory..
