John John pulls a miracle at Pipeline to take the Volcom Pro. Again.

By: Janos Palko

Pardon my French but HOLY SHIT. The Volcom Pipe final. I mean woah, I can barely get my pants back on. Did we all just get laid?

After yesterday's drama and carnage, I wasn't quite sure that Pipeline had it in her to dish out another full day of fireworks.

I was wrong.

For the second year in a row, John John Florence and his shy grin trumped a stacked field of snarling bad boys to hoist the Volcom Pipe Pro trophy.

The final was nothing short of magic. Three of the four finalists dropped at least one 9-plus ride, the point differential between 1st and third was 1.73 points.

Jamie O'brien and Kai Barger owned the final for all but the dying moments, where John John then Slater-ed the field, getting two barrels in rapid succession that very few people on this earth will ever know the joy of riding. Florence dropped a perfect ten and a 9.93 on the buzzer to pull off the miracle.

It was incredible to say the least.

At least Nate Yeomans, Jamie O, Barger, and a couple other semi-finalists can wipe their tears with an invitation to the Pipe Masters, for which this event serves as the trials.

"Record" for Largest Wave Ever Ridden Trivializes Big-Wave Surfing

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
