Evan Geiselman's Breakthrough Year?

By: Janos Palko

Surfing's Prime contest circuit is a grueling 50-week slug-fest plagued with bad waves, travel hiccups, and temptations aplenty. It's daunting task for any teenage surf rat, or at least it used to be.

As young stars including Gabriel Medina, John Florence, and Kolohe Andino have managed to focus on the task at hand and qualify for the World Tour, Evan Geiselman has been left in their wake. Though he used to be mentioned alongside the recent WT additions, he's under the gun to keep pace.

Not wanting to get left behind, Evan just notched his career best result: a runner-up in last week's Australian Open of Surfing, a 6-star Prime event. As one of the first events of the 2012-2013 ASP schedule, Geiselman appears to have the competitive fire and early-positioning to make his run for the WT. The next step is figuring out what it takes to win major contests.

Judging by his latest result and a recent rip-clip from his transplanted home in Southern California, Evan should be hoisting up at least a few oversized checks this year. But the big question is whether he can do what it takes to earn a spot on the main stage.
