Nat's Dream Year Continues

By: Tom Morin

Cold Water Classic
First he suprised us all and won Open Mens at Nationals, every grom's dream. Now he's gone and done it again. Nat Cy Young made his impression felt in the big leagues and won the O'Neill Cold Water Classic at Steamer Lane, every grom's dream in Santa Cruz.

I wasn't there, but I heard Young just edged out my boy Warewolf, aka Chirs Waring in the final. Another DSG trooper, Mason Ho, won the Oakley Pro Junior and made the Quarters of the Pro.

It was a youth revolution. Granger Larson made the Mens final as well, and he like Nat surfed the NSSA last year. In fact the oldest guy in the heat was that old fart, Sean Moody at 25.

A return to old-school measuring techniques is in order

Consider two representations of two very big waves, below. The first is a photograph of Mike Parsons at Cortes Bank. The second is a video of Garrett McNamara near Nazare, Portugal. Now take out some measuring tape and make the distance of one foot between your hands. That's the amount, according to the Billabong XXL committee, that McNamara's wave is bigger than Parsons's wave.
