Day Three — Poncho Sullivan Dominates Men’sCompetition,12-year-old Carissa Moore Defeats WorldChampion Sofia Mulanovich at Body Glove Surfboutpresented by Adio and SG Lowers Pro

San Clemente, Calif. — April 28, 2005 — Heavy morningshowers on day three of the Body Glove Surfboutpresented by Adio and day one of the SG Lowers Prowere just the beginning of what turned out to be animpressive day of waves, surfing and weather.

In his third day of solid surfing, Rob Machado finallyfelt the pressure of the competition as he rode hisfirst closely contested heat of the event goinghead-to-head against Nathan Carroll. Carroll garnereda solid 9.5 with an enormous frontside double-handedair. Not to be outdone, Machado took off on the nextwave and performed a series of giant fans on hisbackhand for a 9.0. Machado’s score, plus a 7.5 thathe posted earlier in the heat was enough for the winwith the young Hawaiian Carroll finishing in a closesecond-place.

The late round heats enjoyed the best conditions ofthe day. Heat seven was dominated by Hawaiian PonchoSullivan with his trademark heavy-footed style. Poncho bested his closest competition Shane Bevan witha series of explosive turns on his forehand that hadthe beachside crowd cheering.

Many anticipated the first appearance of Tom Currenwho advanced from his heat giving the crowd somethingto look forward to tomorrow. Shea Lopez, working hisway back from knee surgery, scored a 9.0 on a reelingoverhead left that he picked up during heat 15.

The women kicked off the SG Lowers Pro competitionwith six of eight heats. Most notably, heat fourpitted World Champion Sofia Mulanovich against12-year-old Carissa Moore and California favoriteHolly Beck. In what turned out to be the surprise ofthe day, Moore took the win over Mulanovich who failedto advance to the next round.

Friday’s contest will feature first appearances byformer World Champion CJ Hobgood, his twin brotherDamien Hobgood, Chris Ward, Kalani Robb, Taylor Knoxand Pat O’Connell. In the women’s competition MeganAbubo, Carissa Moore and Rochelle Ballard will be thefaces to watch.
