San Clemente, Calif. – April 27, 2005 – Day two of the Body GloveSurfbout presented by Adio commenced this morning under overcast skiesgiving way to sun by midmorning. With the first signs of fowl weatherapproaching, light onshore winds were on tap, but Lowers, true to form, held its shape throughout the day providing highly contestable chest- tohead-high waves.
Evidence of increasing competitiveness due to the progression of earlyrounds was evident, as many surfers posted notably high scores. Heat sixwas highly contested as a quartet of hot young surfers hit the water.Among those, local Pat Gudauskas delivered a solid performance scoring a7.0 early on, which he was able to back up late in the heat with a 7.83to take the win.
but asnoon approached, decent sized split-peaks began steadily rolling in.Former Surfbout champ Rob Machado dominated his heat for the second dayin a row and after hitting the beach, commented on surfing the best heatof the day despite the challenging and smaller chop. “I didn’t think Iwould be able to post scores that high when I was looking at it beforethe heat,” said the reserved legend. “It seems like the wind has reallybeen peaking at this point in the day so it can be tough – but Trestlesis a ripable wave no matter what, so I was just looking for the oneswith a good line and a nice wall.”
Machado has his work cut out for him tomorrow as WCT surfers Shea Lopezand Shane Beschan get their chance at Lowers. Surfing legend Tom Currenwill make his first appearance along with Hawaiian Poncho Sullivan. Also advancing from today’s rounds were Austin Ware, Brett Simpson, CheStang and Asher Nolan.
Coming off her win in Fiji, World Champion Sofia Mulanovich will hit thesurf in the SG Lowers Pro. Look for 12-year-old stand-out Carissa Mooreto try and improve upon her second-place finish in last year’s event.Other competitors to watch for include Holly Beck, Melanie Bartels andMegan Abubo.

There’s good news and bad news for Thursday’s competition. The goodnews is that new SW swell(215) will start showing a bit more tomorrow asit combines with that fading S swell(200-215) and some shorter period NWswell(285-290) for waist- to chest-high surf. The bad news is thatcompetitors will be getting wet out of the water as well as in it.There is rain in the forecast for Thursday along with onshore winds from10-15mph from the WSW that come around more NW later in the day. Thiswill bump things up, but hey, most of these guys have surfed contests inworse conditions. Friday and Saturday are looking at a jump in swellreaching shoulder to head high with improving conditions and N to NNWwinds at 10mph.
