Boost Mobile has acquired the ASP license to stage a World Championship Tour (WCT) event at Lowers — the only WCT event on U.S. mainland soil. The event will be named the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Billabong and will be held September 5-14 with a prize purse of 250,000 dollars.
Boost Mobile is a lifestyle based telecommunications company located in Irvine, California. Boost Mobile’s product range includes pre-paid mobile phones, “Re-Boost” pre-paid phone cards, and a wide range of telecommunications accessories and services directed at the youth and action-sports markets.
Peter Adderton, Boost Mobile’s President and CEO, said he was excited about the opportunity to deliver a WCT event back to California. “This is a huge win for surfing and Californian surfing in particular,” Adderton says. “Trestles is an awesome wave and all the guys on the tour have been great in supporting Boost Mobile in making this happen. We wanted to do something exciting in conjunction with our launch into the U.S. market to demonstrate our support of the surf industry, and the Boost Mobile Pro is the ideal way for us to do that.”
Event defending champion and Boost Mobile teamrider Andy Irons was excited to hear the news. “I am really looking forward to competing and defending my title at Trestles,” says Irons. “It is such a rippable wave. It is also awesome to have Boost Mobile as the title sponsor who have been great supporters of surfing and the industry.”
ASP International President and CEO Wayne ‘Rabbit’ Bartholomew was equally enthusiastic. “ASP International is also delighted to be able to announce the return of World Championship Tour surfing to North America,” he says. “Lowers is a world-class venue, totally conducive to the dynamics of contemporary pro surfing, and this event will provide a major boost to American surfing. I congratulate Peter Adderton for bringing Boost Mobile to the WCT arena. This long-term WCT License is just the shot the ASP World Tour needs to go to the next level.”
