Buffalo Exchange Raises Nearly $30,000 For The Surfrider Foundation

Second Annual “Surf Day Event Breaks Previous Record

Tucson, AZ (May 10, 2005) — While Huntington Beach and Santa Cruz continue to fight over the rights to claim themselves “Surf City, an Arizona-based company has decidedly cornered the market on “Surf Day.

This week, the Surfrider Foundation announced that the hip used clothing retailer Buffalo Exchange and its nationwide network of stores successfully raised $29,518 for the Foundation as part of their second annual “Surf Day event on April 23, 2005.

The fundraiser was part of Buffalo Exchange’s annual Dollar Day sale, in which all proceeds from sale items are donated to an environmental charity in honor of Earth Day. This is the largest donation since Buffalo Exchange began the Earth Day benefits in 1997. Buffalo Exchange has raised over $125,000 for environmental causes through their Earth Day Dollar Day sales since 1997.

“Buffalo Exchange is thrilled to once again raise funds for Surfrider and awareness about America’s oceans and beaches to our customers across the country, said Michelle Livingston, Marketing Director for Buffalo Exchange. “I think we are learning not to take our beaches for granted. Each one of us can do something to make a difference – even if it’s just shopping for used clothing at a benefit like this one.

As part of the Surf Day event, Surfrider Foundation chapters and activists manned information tables at nearly all of the participating retail centers, including many which would not normally be thought of as Surfrider strongholds; Philadelphia, Denver, Phoenix and Las Vegas. Nonetheless, Surfrider Foundation worked with Buffalo Exchange to rally activists to the cause.

“When promoting this year’s Surf Day, I told people how great it was to belong to a truly grassroots organization, said Las Vegas volunteer activist Micki Lefferts. “I tell everyone that we are all surfers in our hearts, and even though we live in Las Vegas, we all have a stake in saving the beaches for future generations.
