California’s Ice Cold Summer Swell

As the rest of the nation swelters through heat wave after heat wave, California is experiencing the coolest summer since 1933. Water temps haven’t gotten above 66 degrees and just this afternoon, the staff here at TWS foolishly paddled out in trunks in 59 degree bullshit. The bright side is that we’re in a nice pattern of south swell action right now and experts are calling for a warmer than usual September and October. While it’s a shame we won’t be trunking it, as long as there’s some surf it really doesn’t matter—that’s what wetsuits are for.—Justin Coté

It's funny, the water in San Diego County will be 59 in the morning, 64 by lunch, and 66 by sunset. Then the north wind blows at night and the whole cycle starts over. Ricky Whitlock enjoying a brief spurt of warmth. Photo: Steindler
