Although the most recent ASP World Championship Tour event ended in Australia in early April, C.J. and Damien Hobgood only last week returned to their stateside homes following the completion of their third annual Camp Hobgood. The elite weeklong Camp was held in the Bluey’s Beach area near Forster, New South Wales, Australia.
Camp Hobgood is the most exclusive, invite-only, pro-surfing Camp available to only the best emerging amateur surfers in the world. The Camp immerses these up-and-comers in the pro surfing lifestyle with individual and team competitions, free surfing critiques, and personal mentoring by the Hobgood brothers.

The waves at Bluey’s various beach breaks ranged from three-to-six-foot faces with very clear, warm water and good conditions, and proved to be the ideal setting for this year’s camp. Over the course of the entire week, the kids were judged on free surfing ability, competitive tactics, their ability to work with a photo and video crew, and their overall performance in and out of the water.
The dynamics of such a competitive group created for some amazing surfing by everyone, but it was 15-year-old Clay Marzo — the Camp’s youngest surfer — who stormed to victory on the final day, creating a solid lead over runner-up Dion Agius, earning the inaugural KING OF THE CAMP title. “I’m excited to have been given the chance to go to Australia and to surf with the Hobgoods, said Clay. “All the guys there were surfing really good all week so I’m especially stoked to receive their King of the Camp award. For his performance, Clay was presented with $1,000.00 and a wildcard entry into the 2006 Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro, a 4-star ASP World Qualifying Series event to be held January 4-13 at Sebastian Inlet, Florida.
“It was a great week, said 2001 world champion C.J. “These kids are doing things that we never dreamed of at the same age and at an amazingly high rate of consistency…One thing Damien and I learned is that we can’t take our foot off the accelerator because these guys are right behind us.
“When you see the rivalries and competition between the kids at the Camp and then hear things like Chris saying it was his best trip ever, it makes it all worthwhile, remarked Damien. “We do this Camp to try and somehow help these young surfers who are looking to be professionals, but I can tell you that C.J. and I get just as much out of the Camp as they do; maybe more.Camp Hobgood is an independent project of the Hobgood brothers.
