TransWorld SURF Business is excited to announce that Casey Koteen will be joining the staff as managing editor starting November 10.
Previously Koteen was associate editor of Surfing magazine from April 2000 to February 2002, where he handled a variety of tasks, including long-term editorial planning, management of writing budgets, and producing feature-length articles.
Koteen also has extensive surf-industry retail experience, working at Rusty Surfboards Del Mar from 1992 to 2000, eventually working his way up to manager. During this time he was menswear buyer, helped head up the shop’s marketing and advertising initiatives, and spearheaded several innovative strategies designed to encourage return business.
“TransWorld SURF Business is such a highly respected and valuable publication, it’s really an honor to be a part of it, says Koteen. “As our industry goes through unprecedented growth and development, the role of the magazine has become increasingly important. I’m looking forward to giving its readership the quality reporting, market insight, and unparalleled industry coverage that they’ve come to expect from TransWorld SURF Business. These great qualities have made the magazine such a success, and I’m very excited to continue that tradition.
According to TransWorld SURF Business Editor Sean O’Brien, the competition for the position was fierce: “It was gratifying that so many high-quality candidates were interested in the job — it certainly made the final selection process challenging.
“However, the combination of Koteen’s editing and writing skills, his magazine and surf-retail experience, and his easy-going manner make him clearly my top choice, continues O’Brien. “I look forward to Koteen joining the team — he’ll have a lot to offer the market and an exciting, fresh perspective as well.
Not surprisingly, Koteen is also an accomplished surfer who held the number-two ranking in the NSSA College Men’s division in 1995, and the number-four ranking during the 1996 season. He’s also an accomplished musician, an ironwork artisan, and he recently tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend Katie.
