Most times when you speak to a twelve year old on the phone, the conversation has a bunch of “uh-huh, yeah, uh-huh” type of talk going on. Not so with Andrew Doheny. From the moment he picked up the phone, the kid was fired up and chatting away about his travels, his bros, and surfing: “Dude, I just surfed Huntington-it was so fun! Did you surf today?”
You’d be excited if you were Andrew, too. Freshly turned twelve, Andrew has already been to Costa Rica, O’ahu, Kaua’i, Fiji, Mexico, and El Salvador to hone his growing skills. While not traveling the world with the H.S.S. crew, Andrew can be found ripping apart his home break, Blackies, with buddies and fellow groms Ford Archbold and Kolohe Andino.
Not only a great freesurfer, Andrew is a competitive machine, routinely racking up first-place trophies, and regularly surfing up an age division, where he takes on kids two or three years older than him.
With solid support from his dad, Mike, expect big things from Andrew in the future. And next time you’re surfing Newps, Cloudbreak, or Pavones, look for a grom ripping over you-most likely it’s Andrew Doheny.-Justin Cote
