The first time I saw Carissa Moore surf I was absolutely blown away. It was at Ehukai Beach Park on the North Shore of O’ahu a couple years ago. A little sandbar had formed, creating perfect, Kirra-like rights that zipped along the beach. While knee-high to most of us out there, it was head-high to Carissa and the denizens of other North Shore groms. To my amazement, Carissa was blazing down the line and busting out air reverses, cracking the lip, pulling 360s, and getting fully tubed. I felt completely out-surfed and stupid, so I went to the beach to watch what many are calling a future world champ do her thing.
I’m not the only one singing praises for the 2005 NSSA Nationals Governor’s Cup Champion Carissa Moore, either. Wahine ripper Megan Abubo, also from O’ahu, has seen Carissa from the get-go: “She’s amazing. Freesurfing or competing, I don’t think anyone’s ever done the stuff she’s doing at her age. She’s a phenom for sure!”-Justin Cotà‡
