I first met David Rutherford years ago in Puerto Escondido. He was a skinny, white kid speaking perfect Spanish and pulling into anything that came his way. If it was a ten-foot closeout, he didn’t care, he just went-that’s how you get respect in heavy waves. But it didn’t end there. On the smaller days, David would launch huge airs on Puerto’s ramps and pull them off more often than not.
Not only was he multitalented in the water, he was super cool on the hot sand of Puerto. I didn’t know many of the locals, but David went out of his way to talk to me in his strange accent that is a result of being half Canadian and half Mexican-and this was before I worked for a surf magazine. He didn’t befriend me because I could get a shot of him shredding run in the mag-he did so because he’s a cool kid.
Now David is all grown up and I haven’t seen him for a few years, but I keep seeing crazy photos of him charging Playa Zicatela and basically blowing up. If you’re ever at the Mexican Pipeline, look for a Mexican/Canadian kid boosting airs like a bat out of hell and pulling into ten-foot death bombs, and if you see him, throw out an “Hola, eh?”-Justin Cote
