If you take an evening walk on the historic pier in Huntington Beach, be sure to bring an umbrella. Odds are, if Ian Ekberg is ripping the tops off waves and throwing buckets of water, you’re going to get wet. He may have snaked a couple of guys, but there’s no doubt about it-he rips. Just ask the guy riding behind him, surrendering to watch the show in front.
What you may not know is that Ian is a good kid only forced to be aggressive because of the environment he grew up in. Sure, he could find his own peak down the beach, but that’s not where the action is. He’d rather spend time surfing with buddy Dita Saraiva where the waves are best and in the thick of things. Living only a few blocks from the water and having a supportive family (Dad’s a surf coach at Dwyer Middle School) has made all the difference. Brett Simpson has been an influence, as have Huntington legends Jay Larson, Ryan Turner, Micah Byrne, and Jeff Deffenbaugh-all these boys agree Ian’s on the verge of blowing up!
Now a junior at Huntington Beach High, Ian leads the new rat pack, surfing school events and NSSA comps: “This year I want to focus hard and get the results I know I should be getting-and maybe start to try a few ‘QS contests.”
Keep your eyes peeled for this guy busting airs over your head or smacking the lip in your face. He’s on the road to a solid future.-Ryan Divel
