As the family SUV sits randomly among the bustle of the South Bay, Matt Mohagen’s mom quietly reads her book and waits for him in what’s called “the Mohagen home away from home.” All year long, they drive to every single NSSA event on the west coast of California. For his dedication, he’s been rewarded at the NSSA Nationals with both the Kelly Slater award given for outstanding effort and the Donnie Solomon Memorial award for the competitor who displays the will to win and do his best no matter what the conditions.
The South Bay’s produced familiar names such as Ted Robinson and Alex Gray but hasn’t been known as a competitive hotbed in a long time. However, with all his hard work, Matt’s changing that with top results in the NSSA as well as a spot on the U.S. National Team.
With his award-winning determination, skill, and drive, expect big things out of Matt Mohagen in the future.-Aaron Checkwood
