Over the last couple of years, I’ve come to the conclusion that Mike Klein not only rips in surfing, but has the ability to make best friends with anyone he meets. He’ll meet someone for the first time and the next day he’ll be hanging out with them like he’s known them for years! I first met Mike (a.k.a. Kelly Slater) when we were seventh graders at Valley Junior High School in Carlsbad, California.
I realized Mike likes to do things his way when he took a snowboarding trip with my family in 1997. While boarding one day, he went off by himself and got stuck in a steep gully. I looked for him for about two to three hours. I couldn’t find him, so I went to the car where my mom was waiting. She was upset with me when she found out Mike was “lost.”
Finally, he came stumbling back to the car with a story about what had happened to him. Apparently, he thought he saw a jump he could take off on and come right back onto the run, but instead he got stuck. He does the same thing surfing. When you surf with Mike, you have to be careful about how many lefts you take off on because he really loves to go left and he’ll snake you on the ones he wants. Next time you’re in the water, watch your limit on the lefts, and look out for Mike’s frontside gouge!¿Dane Johnson
