Seems like there are a ton of good surfers coming out of Carlsbad and Carlsbad High these days. One of them, Mike Klein, is one of them. Mike’s a very good surfer who not only gave me this candid interview, but beat me up after it. I caught up with the bully at The Surf For The Sea contest in Oceanside and this is what he had to say:
Who are some of the guys that you look up to around here?
Eric Viscosi, Jason Bennett, Dane Johnson, Che Stang, and Ben Kelly.
You had a pretty big heat yesterday. You took out Jason Bennett). How does it feel to beat a guy that you look up to?
[IMAGE 1]To beat Jason Bennett was actually pretty cool. I don’t think that if he was trying as hard as he possibly could that it would have happened. I think that I just got longer waves. He’s an insane surfer and I was stoked that I was able to surf against him and beat him.
When it comes to getting chicks on the Carlsbad surf team, who gets the most?
Dave Kincannon gets all the girls on the Carlsbad surf team.
What about Che and you?
Che gets girls, we all get girls, but Dave’s…
Dave’s the heat winner?
Dave’s the heat winner. He gets all the chicks. He knows everyone. You can’t walk down the halls with him because he has to stop and talk to ten people. It’s not his fault. They always grab him and go, “Hey, how’s it going? What are you doing? Call me.”
What does the future look like for you?
I’m going to finish school, travel a little more this year, do all the WQS’s in the US this year, and then finish up the season and see how I do. If it’s worth it, I’m going to try to become a professional surfer. If not, I’m going to go to college and make lots of money.
Between all of you guys on the Carlsbad team, who do you think is going to be the most successful?
Dane surfs really well. He’s a really good competitor. As far as surfing performance, I think Che pretty much takes the cake on anyone in the NSSA right now. I think he needs to focus a little more on his competitive skills, but he’s definitely one of the best surfers around and I look up to him. He’s just a really cool guy. [IMAGE 3]
So do you guys wish that you were from Oceanside?
No. I was actually at a party in Oceanside last night, and it’s pretty dirty. I saw some pretty crazy stuff going on there.
You secretly don’t wish you were from Oceanside?
I think you’re lying, and that’s the end of this interview.
